I’ve only just begun to explore the California delta. It’s a maze of waterways, levees, islands, and tiny towns.
Locke is the only town in the United States built by the Chinese for the Chinese. Few Chinese-Americans live there any longer, but the old wooden buildings, with their oriental details remain. Some of the structures lean at an alarming slant. Inside the buildings, few of the wooden floors are level. Fire hoses are stationed in strategic locations around town since it’s the most “combustible community” in the Delta. Thankfully, the only fire I experienced was in my mouth, after eating banana peppers smeared with peanut butter at Al the Wop’s. (BTW, it was disgusting. I tried three peppers, interspersed with beers, in an effort to appreciate the local delicacy but they never got any better.)
