I’ve never been to a Buddhist temple or even a meditation group, so I was stumped on what to wear to the grand opening of the Sacramento Dharma Center. Would I have to take my shoes off? Would I be sitting on the ground? On a cushion? Or would there be prolonged standing? Is exposed skin a faux pas? Would everyone else be dressed like hippies? I dressed for all possibilities with a light sweater, cargo pants, low heels, and fresh socks. (And crystal earrings for the hippies.)

Sweater, Express (consignment). Pants, Lauren Ralph Lauren. Booties, Blondo. Earrings, Francesca’s. Bag, Rebecca Minkoff.

The pants were a good call. We sat in chairs, but everyone else wore slacks or jeans (with the exception of a nun in robes), so I fit in. I did have to remove my shoes, so I was glad to be wearing new socks. (And, I’ll admit, I enjoyed checking out everyone else’s socks.) With the exception of a baja sweater, no one was dressed like a hippie.

I left with some accessories for my journal:
