I’ve never been to a Buddhist temple or even a meditation group, so I was stumped on what to wear to the grand opening of the Sacramento Dharma Center. Would I have to take my shoes off? Would I be sitting on the ground? On a cushion? Or would there be prolonged standing? Is exposed skin a faux pas? Would everyone else be dressed like hippies? I dressed for all possibilities with a light sweater, cargo pants, low heels, and fresh socks. (And crystal earrings for the hippies.)

The pants were a good call. We sat in chairs, but everyone else wore slacks or jeans (with the exception of a nun in robes), so I fit in. I did have to remove my shoes, so I was glad to be wearing new socks. (And, I’ll admit, I enjoyed checking out everyone else’s socks.) With the exception of a baja sweater, no one was dressed like a hippie.
