I hesitated to wear my denim jacket to school – not because it’s too casual, but I’m afraid it’s too political with the “no harm” button and safety pin. I took a risk and only got positive comments.

· And the plague ·
When I scouted this mural on Sunday, I wondered at the client who would want their photo taken in front of a rat emerging from the mouth of a skull. It turns out, that client is myself. The ambience seemed just right for my para-military outfit and the way I felt a few hours into the latest plague. Apocalypse now!

· I think they were sincere ·
I’m mostly not a fan of subbing elementary school. I prefer kids that don’t cry when another student tells them they have no eyebrows. (I suppose that could still happen in high school, but it’s less likely.) I do have to admit the younger students have a certain charm when, at the end of the day, they give you a group hug and tell you that you are the “best substitute ever.”

I used to have an aversion to gray and brown, together. (I was also prejudiced against black and navy and black and brown.) I was sure that they just looked “off,” like I’d dressed in the dark. Then, I noticed how well gray and brown went together in nature: feathers, fur, trees, rocks. No one would say those clash. Here’s another example of gray and brown pairing well together: bricks and mortar. You can’t build a wall without both!

There’s still one color combo I can’t stomach: red and brown. Someone once said that the pairing reminded them of a scab and it’s forever tainted in my mind.
· Indoor recess is not recess at all ·
When recess is cancelled in elementary school, the class stays in your room and you make your own recess. This means that you don’t get a break and the kids don’t expend their excess energy. Rainy days make for long days at the primary level. Thankfully, today was sunny for third grade.

· I was an "A" student ·
No matter the title, I always felt like it was a “cheat” that we got to read books for school. It was like eating candy for dinner. Of course, I’d read the entire book on the first day and then be totally bored when we were given reading time in class. Then, I’d have to sneak my non-educational material into class to read, instead.

· I bet you don't know what it is, either ·
A few weeks ago, I was a “roving teacher” and today I was a “resource specialist.” I’ll be honest, I accepted the job thinking this was a librarian. I was stoked to spend the day with hundreds of books. After accepting, I thought to Google the term and discovered that it is a teacher in special education. I was okay with that, too. I was looking forward to working with individual and small groups of students for the day. When I got to the elementary school, I found out that the job was filling in for the Physical Education/Computers teacher. Thank goodness there was no P.E. in the day’s schedule because I certainly wasn’t dressed appropriately. Every day is full of surprises as a substitute teacher!
